No amount of soap, paint remover or cosmetic cream could remove the dye of their deeds, the humiliating revelation of their most secret desires, their hidden thoughts and wishes. Ashamed, people hid in their homes, embarrassed even for members of their own families to see written on their faces every deed and thought of their lives. Strange as it may seem, however, some of the people did not seem to mind the facial doomsday dye. Prostitutes, drunks and thieves roared with laughter as bankers, judges and bishops went about with brown paper bags over their heads as they attempted to hide the immoral deeds of their lives. The embarrassment of the pious church-going folks, whose faces were as colorful as the rainbow, delighted the public sinners.

For the first three days after the mysterious rain shower all were busy attempting to remove their own stains. People tried plastic surgery without success. They prayed as if the world were about to end -- which it was -- but no amount of prayers could remove the blemishes. Others attempted charity, for was it not true that "charity covers a multitude of sins"? People gave away money to the poor and sold possessions, giving great donations to the Church. After each gift they would run to a mirror, only to discover that their sins still remained written clearly and colorfully on their faces.

Since each deed left its own characteristic color, it didn't take long to determine the code: green for envy and jealousy, red for hate and discrimination, yellow for dishonesty, and so on down the list of human folly. The result was that all the secrets were now public, and each person sat in judgement of everyone else.
