The Judgement Day

The congenial weatherman, the night before on the evening news, had predicted that it would be a typical spring day -- warm and sunny with little possiblity of rain. The early morning of this first day of April fit perfectly that weather forecast. However, at about 11:30 that morning an eerie thing happened -- a gentle April shower began to fall. What made it so uncanny was not so much the absence of thunder or wind but that not a single cloud could be seen anywhere in the beautiful spring sky! The cloudless April shower lasted no more than twenty minutes, but during that time everyone came out-of-doors to observe this strange wonder of nature.

All the people stood staring skyward as the gentle, warm rain dampened their clothes and their faces. No one seemed to mind the wetness; a few even joked that it must be some cosmic April Fool's Day prank. At about ten minutes before noon the rain stopped, and a giant rainbow arched across the blue eastern sky. Slowly, but quite visibly -- in letters of blue, green, red, yellow and purple -- the rainbow spelled out a message: "Only those free from the stain of sin shall see God." The cryptic message, while technicolor in its display, was terrifying in its implication.

As people looked to one another for some explanation of this strange phenomenon, their eyes filled with terror; for on each of their faces dark stains slowly began to appear, stains in all colors of the rainbow. Every sin that they
