world.gif (6470 bytes)spapadim@csd.uch.gr from Crete, Greece , 01/18/98, rating=10:
I decided to read this book mainly out of curiosity, and because I heard that it treats religions as human. Myself being an avowed atheist, I must admit that the book changed my attitude towards religion. The author's exposition of his subject is brilliant, to say the least. Full of well-chosen and instructive examples, the book communicates clearly the basic ideas of the most important religions. The author is not particularly concerned with historical details, religious institutions and social settings (though he doesn't completely omit them). An alternative title, according to the author might be "The World's Greatest Wisdom Traditions." The book examines "pure" religion; maybe the worst mistake religion ever made was to get mixed up with people... but then again, probably not!
pope.gif (6972 bytes) John Paul II has made greater strides toward understanding and atoning for Rome's complicity in anti-Semitism than any other pope in history. The Hidden Pope shows how and why this rapprochement is taking place by telling the story of John Paul's lifelong friendship with Jerzy Kluger, a Polish Jew.
matthewfox.gif (5553 bytes) "Matthew Fox is the only man who dares to find the connections between seemingly conflicting dogma. He is the freshest voice. He is a true Christian - one who loves, who accepts, one who ministers. The hate ridden religious right has a lot to learn from Matthew Fox. Jesus never hated anyone."
newfaith.gif (12740 bytes) "Not surprisingly the baby-boom generation is dominating many U.S. religious trends, especially the evolution of "hybrid religions." For example, disgruntled Catholics may intertwine their childhood roots with the principles of Quakerism, "as seekers separated from their religious heritage search out new expressions of faith." As for the years ahead? "Two words describe the future of religious denominations--downsized and decentralized." Also, social action and spirituality will probably be more purposefully linked in the new millennium."  "Employing personal interviews, sociological and theological studies, and denominational statistics, it intelligently examines, in all religious traditions, how and why Americans are worshiping. It considers exposure to foreign cultures, new doctrines, a greater emphasis on individualism, Generation X, and an increasing American consumerism as elements influencing not only the present American religious spectrum but also where religion is headed." "...also describe strange bedfellow relationships, such as that of Pentecostal Christians and Orthodox Jews, who have common political goals."
Beginner's Guide to Revelations : A Jungian Interpretation The author, Robin Robertson, 08/10/96:
I'm afraid most people think this is a religous book. I looked at the Book of Revelation as if it were a "big dream" about a major change of consciousness, and "amplified" it to see what it could tell us about consciousness. The Book of Revelation was written in the early years of the Christian era, when the idea that we each contained divinity was very new, and had to be "projected" out onto Christ. 2,000 years later, we're reaching the end of the era.
fengshui.gif (6048 bytes)jcouch@watson.wustl.edu , 07/10/96, rating=8:
Create harmony in your surroundings through Feng Shui.
Livining in harmony. Somehow in our city apartments or our suburban houses. Amidst the clutter and clatter that is life, to be at peace...to have our lives run smoothly.... Isn't that what we want? Feng Shui master Lam Kam Chuen explains (and doesn't it make sense?) that much of our inner and outer disharmony comes from the physical environments that we create: what colors we paint our walls, where furniture is placed, whether we live in a house facing an intersection. Starting with a clear explanation of the properties of yin and yang: the fundamental forces and energies (the seasons, the animals, the directions, etc), Master Lam presents the fundamentals of arranging your home (and thus your life) in harmony with yourself and with the universe.
mother.gif (5058 bytes) Recommended Book, 04/01/98:
In this tender memoir, author Maren Hansen vividly and humorously demonstrates how mothering overlaps with the divine. Hansen, who is a psychotherapist and an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, also has the gift of storytelling. As we follow the births of her three children, she deftly leads us through her stages of motherhood: the dismay of morning sickness, the ambivalence of amniocentesis, the hilarious post-birth waddling, the betrayal of the maiden babysitter, and the horrifying epiphany that her body has come to resemble that of the stout and ancient Venus of Willendorf. Always on the lookout for spiritual insight as well as a good laugh, Hansen offers mothers two of the most valuable tools of motherhood.
