A different slant on the Our Father
On the Day you were born, you cried, and the world rejoiced.
Nothing But Angels
Once you have learned to love yourself in all your unruliness and complexity, with all your contradictions, your ambivalence, your self-deceptions once you have learned to love the dark side, the hidden lunar surface of your consciousness - the anger and sadness, the self-judgement and feelings of powerlessness- you have mastered the hardest part of the curriculum.
The rest of your lessons here will be easy ones. Practicing what you know. Passing the gift on to others. Loving them when they attack you. Telling them " you can do it" when they are trembling in fear and lack of self-confidence. Reminding them that whatever happens is acceptable. It can be worked with. In other words, you begin your angel apprenticeship. Right here on earth, in this body. Isn't that a trip? Now when people ask for divine intervention, YOU get to appear in their lives.
No, not Jimmy Stewart's celestial friend. YOU. The angel in training. Remember?
YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. And now you know it.
Congratulations. You have earned your wings!!!!
The Ecstatic Moment Paul Ferrini
|A man distraught by all the pain and suffering he saw all
around him broke down and banged his fists into the dirt. His head turns upward and he
yells at his God. "Look at this mess. Look at all this pain and suffering. Look at
all this killing and hate. God. Oh God! WHY DON'T YOU DO SOMETHING!!"
And his God spoke to him and said "I did. I sent you."
God with skin on.
"In the Buddhist view, the greatest ignorance is believing the world exists in the way it appears to exist...we do exist but in a relative way, not in an absolute way. The closer you look, the more we recede. We can't be found." Pilgrim by Richard Gere
The Ontario Consultants on Religious
Tolerance provides a very handy site called, appropriately enough, Descriptions of 63
Religions, Faith Groups & Ethical Systems. This site offers basic information on 63
different religions, faith groups, and ethical systems--all organized into groups ranging
from World Religions, to Neo-Pagan Religious Faiths, to Doomsday Faith Groups. Typically,
each entry contains a brief history, sacred texts, beliefs and practices, sects, and links
to related sites.
I have experienced fear in the eyes of a few fundamentalist christians when I mention the word Wicca and witch as part of my spirituality. I have experienced their whispers and their feeble attempts to convert me from myself. One of the best sellers at a New Age store is a button, "God, save me from your followers."
Salem Witchcraft Hysteria
National Geographic designed this site that uses an interplay of image and text to evoke the hysterical tenor of Salem during the witchcraft trials. Experience the proceedings first hand as you assume the identity of a town resident accused of sorcery. Your life is on the line -- how will you plead? When you've completed your Salem adventure, wander over to Ask the Expert and pose any lingering questions to historian Richard Trask.
The Buddhist Emperor Asoka inscribed it on rock, and the origional can still be read today:
"One should not honour only one's religion and condemn the religions of others, but one should honor other's religions for this or that reason. So doing, one helps one's own religion to grow and renders service to the religions of others too. In acting otherwise one digs the grave of one's own religion and also does harm to other religions. Whosoever honours his own religion and condemns other religions, does so indeed through devotion to his own, thinking 'I will glorify my own religion'.
But on the contrary, in so doing he injures his own religion more gravely. So concord is good: Let all listen, and be willing to listen to the doctrines professed by others."

Unitarian Universalism Affirms (source unknown) That Creation is too grand, complex, and mysterious to be captured in a narrow creed. That is why we cherish individual freedom of belief. At the same time our convictions lead us to other affirmations . . . That the blessings of life are available to everyone, not just the Chosen or the Saved; That Creation itself is Holy -- the earth and all its creatures, the stars in all their glory; That the Sacred or Divine, the Precious and Profound, are made evident not in the miraculous or supernatural but in the simple and the everyday; That human beings, joined in collaboration with the gifts of grace, are responsible for the planet and its future; That every one of us is held in Creation's hand -- a part of the interdependent cosmic web -- and hence strangers need not be enemies; That no one is saved until we All are saved, where All means the whole of Creation; That the paradox of life is to love it all the more even though we ultimately lose it.
|Each person is a unique representative of the
Divine. The Sufis say, "If human beings knew their own inner
secrets, never would they look elsewhere for seeking happiness, peace and inner
light." Therefore the essence of the Path is to find oneself. "Know thyself,
know thy Lord!" is an imperative of the Sufi Way.
"Through love we are destroyed and recreated. This is the ancient mystery of the Sufi path. To reach God you have to be turned inside out, burnt with the fire of love until nothing remains but ashes."
Sufis believe that your deepest heartache radiates outward like a beacon of light to attract the teacher -- and the teachings -- that you need.
