09/12/2001 "cheryl and mark, as everyone in this country is also doing carol and i have been stuck to the news. the event's sadden all in the world. i have been traveling in the middle east and the rest of the world and have always been treated with the upmost respect. but that doesn't mean there aren't those idiots out there. that is why we have company supplied security. the US has lagge'd behind the rest of the world in that respect. i'm sure we will belatedly tighten things up. my fathers boss's son son who is a full colonel in the army was in the pentagon at the time of the attack and his wife as well. the aircraft crashed in between there two offices. they escaped un scathed paul stayed to help with the evacuation of fellow personell. paul raggio graduated from hoover high class of 73. because of his army stations and because and my travels we see each other in the most bizarre places. like all we pray for all those who were killed. your old friend mike collins"

09/12/2001  "Cheryl, Thank you for this email string. I personally don't know of any LCHS classmates living in either NY or DC so really have nothing to add to your quest for information.

I am especially touched by Dennis Phinney's note. I didn't know Dennis very well in high school but do remember him as a very quiet, intelligent sort. I'm looking forward to saying hello to him at the reunion.  Best Regards, Bill Hurst"

"Me too. I remember him, and your face, for instance. I'm learning about a number of people I wish I had known better in high school. I am enjoying getting to know them, and look forward to the reunion with everyone.

I thought you might appreciate a heads up like Lisa Scivally gave to me. She told me to go to Scott's site:

and read Dennis Phinney's bio.

Hope you'll put yours in too. "

09/12/2001 "America: The Good Neighbor

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan, and to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?

Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon...not once, but several times, and home safely again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at.

Even their draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their noses at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.

I hope Canada is not one of those.

Stand proud America!!!!"

The Canadians are being wonderful neighbors at this moment - My husband, Larry, who is a captain with Continental Airlines, had to divert to St. Johns, Newfoundland while over the Atlantic coming home from Brussels  to Newark on Tuesday am.  They had to sit on the plane for several (6-8) hrs, along with 28 other planes) while the Canadians tried to figure out where to put everybody in that small town.  In the meantime, the town came out with food and beverages for all. He says that they have been wonderful to them.

He and the crew and now in an airport hotel and calls infrenquently because there are only 3 lines out.  He thinks maybe they will get out Friday - maybe. They didn't even see TV coverage until late last nite - they only had a scratchy radio while on the plane - they are all, of course, heartsick.  They are now going thru what we did yesterday while being glued to the newscoverage and the feelings of loss and sadness. I can hear it in his voice.  He now wonders at the enormity of getting all the planes and passengers back up again - There is going to be so much to do - more than he wants to think about right now.

I just wanted to thank the Canadians for all their help in this trying time.  Judy Battersby"
