08/30/2001 "Cheryl, You really do 'have it going on' with this website. I am enjoying it immensely. I was happy to read that Todd Vrebalovich has come back from the dead. But the news of Marilyn Black's death hit me like a sharp kick in the stomach. Marilyn and I didn't hang in the same crowds a lot in school but I can still remember in Mrs. Durian's 4th grade class at Paradise Canyon when she said something nice to me. Isn't it funny how a classmate can say something nice to you when you are this nine-year old kid and forty years later you still remember it?

Marilyn's father was one of the coaches of our Gray-Y basketball team. Our team was the Thunderbirds and I remember how cool I thought I looked when I put on my maroon and white Thunderbird t-shirt. And of course we always had one of the Black twins, either Marilyn or Bob in our class because they didn't want twins to be in the same classroom.

The entire Black family was "good people." What a loss. Dennis Phinney"

Dear Cheryl,

As far as I am concerned, the usual custom of having only one class reunite at a time seems a bit counterproductive when we can have the opportunity of seeing even more friends. Especially at "our age"!

Absolutely, please DO post the "tour" info. on your class's website. There is no official tour by a docent (I considered it, but decided that people would probably want to go at their own pace rather than a docent's), and our class has no reservation for that time in the gardens. I've merely set meeting times for the class of '70 to gather and the rest will take its course. The gardens are open to the public and I know people would LOVE to be able to see anyone from the class of '71 who wants to show up. Heck, any classes a few years before ours or after could come. What a trip to have all those people show up at Descanso and hang out!

I do plan to ask my mother (a former docent) to take me around a few weeks ahead of time so I will be a little bit more "hip" to some of the fun details. People will have to stay with me if they want to know how to find the trapdoor spider nests!

We walked there this morning and saw three deer, a mother and two youngsters, browsing among the foliage in the native plant section. Can't guarantee that experience on our morning, but you never know.

Take care,

Jody Kenney

Dear LCHS70 Garden Lovers:
I'd like to offer two "tours" of the gardens for those of you who are interested.

Saturday, October 27th, 2001
The first will be at 9:00 a.m., when the gardens first open. Plan to meet at the admissions gate at 8:45, and we'll have the best shot at the tranquility Descanso provides. There's nothing listed on the website yet about our date, but since it's around Halloween, there may be a lot of little kids in costumes running around. They're pretty cute, actually. If I get more information on the day's events, I'll post it.

We'll take about an hour for general touring, then you can go off and enjoy places you liked the most OR go out to a WONDERFUL breakfast in Montrose. I recommend the Black Cow, on the right as you drive onto Honolulu just after crossing Verdugo. Breakfasts are outstanding, and the coffee is good, too. For those of you who don't want to drive ALL the way into Montrose, there's a Starbuck's and a Goldstein's Bagels across the way from Verdugo Hills Hospital in the UA Theater complex.

The second "tour" will begin at 10:00 for those of you who went to the Black Cow, etc., early, or just wanted to sleep in. Again, we will meet at the front gate at about 9:50. I'll see if I can dig up an LCHS sign to get our group together.

Of course, you may choose to show up at the Gardens at any time and wander around trying to find us. I don't anticipate that we will move in an organized pack anyway -- you just might want to linger somewhere. There is a wonderful stream that meanders through the Rose Garden now, with grass and benches for relaxing. You can sit and store up energy for the events of the weekend!

****Early birds who have membership in the arboretum system may be able to get in at 8:00, which is an even better time at Descanso, especially for birding (Whistler). Call the gardens to check to see if your card will get you in. I'll be there at 8:00 if you will!

BRING YOUR CAMERA! There's always something beautiful on display. Also bring your VISA card; the gift shop has truly appealing and tempting things. 10% off purchase price if you have a membership card... I think the shop opens at 10:00.

Cost is listed below. For more information, including directions, please go to www.descanso.com/general.cfm.

Admission
General $5.00. Senior/Students, and Youth $3.00. Children $1.00.
Guild members and Children under 5 are always free.
Tram $2.00. Enchanted Railroad $1.50 (Saturday and Sunday only.)

Looking forward to seeing you. Be well,

Jody Edwards Kenney

08/29/2001 "It was fairly early in the school year. Gary was a handful, running around the classroom (in retrospect, he may have been an ADD kid), generally out of control. As I recall, Mrs. Price finally grabbed him (mind you, all of us were sitting at our little wooden desks watching this, mouths ajar) by the wrist in front of the class-- I believe she was trying to wrestle him down to the principal's office-- when he just hauled off and punched her (with his unrestrained hand) in the mouth! I remember it got REAL QUIET in the class and that she just stood there, hand over bleeding mouth and eyes wide open-- and then I think she silently walked him down the hall to the principal, leaving us alone in the classroom. I think the Principal came in to tell us she would be out for a few days-- and that she was permanently gone shortly thereafter. I don't recall Gary lasting much longer at the school, either. I draw a blank about who our substitute was for the rest of the year. So that was my introduction to life at La Canada Elementary! I can't believe I remember this-- school seems a million years ago-- and not."

08/29/2001 "I'm doing the HAPPY DANCE! Missing classmate Mike Collins just emailed me!"

08/29/2001  "Hi, Cheryl--Web site looks great! I was at La Canada Elem with you and Carol (moved there in 4th grade). I had Mrs. Price until she had her front teeth punched out by Gary Meckel and retired-- I don't remember who replaced her. I had Miss Welch for 5th grade, and yes, I also remember her crying when we got the news about JFK. Also, you remember Kathy Moore's old family mansion because her mom was our Blue Bird/Camp Fire Girl troop leader-- and we used to have our meetings there after school (LC Elementary). Kathy, you and Carol, me, Sue Fuller, Dorothy Brinegar, and Roxanne Foley (her mom was the assistant leader) were in the troop. Thanks for adding me to the list and for the trip down memory lane!
