08/25/2001 "I was just reading Irene Peters' memories from 4th grade at La Canada Elementary school. I was in Mrs. Woods' class. I remember it was at the end of the hallway in the main building (down the hall from the main office). I don't remember the names of the other 4th grade teachers but remember there was one 4th grade classroom down the outside corridor to the north of our room and one in another wing to the east of our room. As Irene said, one of the teachers must have been Mrs. Ellis. Do you remember the other? I don't remember Mrs. Wood too well, but do remember that she was a kind woman who was an innovative teacher. I remember that she implemented an individualized mathematics program - for a while, anyway. I just remember all of the students working on individual worksheets. As we completed each sheet, we took them up to Mrs. Wood who would then correct the sheet and if we demonstrated the desired competency, she move us onto the next level. The room was in controlled chaos while this system was running but I don't remember it happening all the time so maybe she got burnt out from it.

I remember Barbara Welch but don't remember anyone ever providing us with an explanation of why she was skipped to 5th grade. I remember that Mary Horral (spelling?) was also skipped a grade (5th grade perhaps). I think she was Jay Muller's girlfriend then. Never heard what happened to her.

Does anyone remember Trinka Sandquist?

Irene, you mentioned a Mrs. Ellis in 4th grade. Wasn't there also a Mrs. Ellis in 5th grade? We had Mrs. Trax (Seiler took it over for second semester), Mrs. Ellis (taught in the corner classroom), Mrs. Welch, and one other teacher (young, black hair). Does anyone from La Canada Elementary have any info to add to these recollections? Leigh"

"The only thing I remember about Trinka Sandquist is that no matter how sick she was, her parents wouldn't let her stay home.

I had Mrs. Smith (young, black hair) in 5th grade. I remember her fondly."

"Mrs. Smith. THAT WAS HER NAME!!!"

" Irene asked if anyone remembered Mike Mahee. I met him at the North Orange County Users Groups in Orange, California in the late 80s. I was the co-president of the Education Special Interest Group. I was presenting something about what was doing with my Apple IIe in the classroom when a gentleman from our group of about people asked a question. He began the question by identifying himself as John Mahee. Later I asked him if he was any relation to Mike Mahee and he told me that he was his father. He also introduced me to Mike who was sitting next to him. Mike was friendly but quite retiring. Apparently, he had been riding his motorcycle without a helmet and was in a tragic accident that left him with severe brain damage. He has been living with his parents ever since. Too bad."

"Shoot, i just composed a note and clicked the wrong button..i don't know where it went but I was remembering kindergarten with Mrs. Muff, Mrs. Munson 1st,  Mrs. Patton 2nd grade, Mrs. Urschel 3rd, Mrs. Simpson 4th and Mrs. More for 5th.  Doggy day on Wednesdays meant a hot dog and a cupcake.  The cafeteria wasn't built until the last year and the burgers were ghastly.  Mr. Henn was the principal.  I remember having to climb up on this stump to reach the rings and always fearing falling into it when I was done swinging all the way around.  I had callouses on my hands all the way thru the fifth grade from those rings.  Liza Sears/Anast  and Chrissy Holmes lived on the other side of the gate.  Mrs. Munson lived in that wonderful house on the corner of Palm.  Remember Mary Russell and Sloan McDonald went to Palm Crest until the 5th grade and then went to Westridge.  And remember Bart Rhinehart whose father owned Indian Springs the only public swimming pool in the area down off Verdugo and Canon.  Now it's a Sav-on.  Golly gee I digress way too much, see you all real soon, love D'Lorah"

"Cheryl, send me your mailing address again and I will send my copy of 10 yr reunion book. Pete"
" Cheryl, It will be in today's mail. Pete"

08/24/2001   "Hi Cheryl! Yes, the home address and phone you have for me is correct. But my e-mail address has changed to m.vancleave@att.net.   Ross Ranking called me last night to ask about my plans (we've kept in touch over the years), and as I told him, I very much want to come to the reunion, but I may have some difficulty getting away from Washington just then. So keep your fingers crossed for me -- I'd love to see you! Warmly, Michelle"

08/23/2001   "Hi- I do not need them back- what else would you like? I did not quite get it- shall I copy our sixth, seventh and eighth grade photos for you and send them on? There are some cool collages in our sixth and seventh grade yearbook- some of our peers who were huge leaders during middle school and continued throughout their high school career! It adds interest and dimension to our group."

" Isn't there 8th grade 'senior pictures' like in the yearbook, individual pictures of everyone? If you could send me the pages, I'll scan them individually.
I've got 6th and 7th grade yearbooks, just have to get to them.
I've almost got all your stuff up.
Love the interest and dimension.
I should finish up tomorrow, then I'll send an email to everybody about the new stuff."
